A first glimpse of mid back vowels in Girona Catalan
نویسنده
چکیده
Mid back vowels [o] and [ɔ] appear to be merging in the Catalan spoken in the region of Girona. In this brief paper, we present preliminary data on the production of these vowels in one of the 12 designated survey points for the study of the phenomenon, the area of Ter-Brugent. The first results in this area show that our speakers present an almost complete merger of the mid back vowel pair, and no remarkable differences are observed with regard to gender nor age.

Spanish and Catalan in Majorca: Are There Contact-Induced Changes in the Catalan Vowel System?
The vowel systems of Catalan and Spanish are considerably different. Spanish has a simple fivevowel symmetrical system, which is the most common number of vowel phonemes cross-linguistically (Hualde, 2005). As shown in Table 1, the vowels contrast along two dimensions: along the height dimension, there are two high vowels (/i/ and /u/), two mid vowels (/e/ and /o/), and one low vowel (/a/); and...
متن کاملDispersion and variability in Catalan five and six peripheral vowel systems
This study compares F1 and F2 for the vowels of the five and six peripheral vowel systems of four minor dialects of Catalan (Felanitxer, Gironı́, Sitgetà, Rossellonès), with those of the seven peripheral vowel systems of the major dialects those minor dialects belong to (Majorcan, Eastern). Results indicate that most mid vowel pairs subjected to neutralization may be characterized as near-merger...
متن کاملThe relative complexity of Catalan vowels and their perceptual correlates
Different phonological analyses of front-mid vowels can be seen to agree on one point: =G? is more complex than ='?. Support for the validity of this claim is potentially available from perceptual and acquisitional studies. The vowels of Catalan are described, and procedures detailed which identify formant values for Catalan front-mid vowels. Empirical tests using native speakers and English co...
متن کاملWhy are the Catalan contrasts between /e/-/ɛ/ and /o/-/ɔ/ so difficult for even early Spanish-Catalan bilinguals to perceive?
Previous research has shown that Catalan mid-vowel contrasts remain difficult for native Spanish adults to perceive, even those who began using Catalan as an L2 as young children. Here we tested 82 Spanish-Catalan bilinguals first exposed to their L2 by school age (3-6 years) who differed in self-reported use of Catalan. All participated in categorization and AXB discrimination tasks using four...
متن کاملDifferential positional neutralization of back vowels in two Majorcan Catalan sub-dialects
The present paper explores the patterns of unstressed vowel reduction affecting the three back vowels of Catalan: /ɔ/, /o/ and /u/. In particular, we examine two reduction patterns found in the Catalan dialect spoken on the island of Majorca: (i) the general Majorcan pattern according to which /ɔ/ and /o/ merge to [o] in unstressed position and /u/ remains different (as [u]), and (ii) a pattern...
